Guide to 10DLC Message Flow Field

The most challenging field on the campaign registration is the message flow field which is where everything about how subscribers provide their phone numbers and opt in to your campaign is documented. You can gather sms opt in, in one of four ways: Digital, Verbal, Paper, or by Inbound message. Only one opt-in method is required for each campaign. Pick one of those four opt in methods that you want to document in the campaign and follow the corresponding template below but fill in the variables that match the details for your brand and campaign:

Message Flow:

  • The user navigates to [BRAND'S website] and subscribes via a specific opt-in page at [url] or [path subscriber takes if gated] and [link to screenshot using a public link such as Imgur or Google].

Please Note:

The digital form must include a disclaimer similar to: "By providing your phone number you agree to receive SMS [use case(s)] from [Brand Name]. Message frequency may vary. Standard Message and Data Rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out. Reply HELP for help. Consent is not a condition of purchase. [Privacy Verbiage such as: Your mobile information will not be sold or shared with third parties for promotional or marketing purposes.] or [Link to compliant Privacy Policy]."

Message Flow:

  • When a customer [calls or is present at the office], the representative explains the consent process verbally: Agent states to the customer: "By providing your phone number, you agree to receive SMS [Use Case(s)] from [Brand Name]. Message frequency may vary. Standard Message and Data Rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out. Reply HELP for help. We will not share mobile information with third parties for promotional or marketing purposes." Once the customer verbally agrees, the phone number is recorded, and a confirmation SMS is sent: "You have agreed to receive SMS updates from [Brand Name]. Msg freq may vary. Std msg & data rates apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help."

Message Flow:

  • When a customer [calls or is present at the office], the representative explains the consent process verbally: Agent states to the customer: "Would you like to sign up for SMS notifications from [BRAND] so we can send you [use cases + marketing]? By providing your phone number, you agree to receive SMS [Use Case(s) + marketing] from [Brand Name]. Message frequency may vary. Standard Message and Data Rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out. Reply HELP for help. We will not share mobile information with third parties for promotional or marketing purposes." Once the customer verbally agrees, the phone number is recorded, and a confirmation SMS is sent: "You have agreed to receive SMS updates from [Brand Name]. Msg freq may vary. Std msg & data rates apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help. To confirm you also want to receive marketing messages please reply YES" If the customer replies: YES — "[BRAND] Thanks, you've now been subscribed to SMS notifications, including promotions from [BRAND] Msg frequency varies. Msg&data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe or HELP for help." If the customer does NOT reply YES, they will not be opted in to promotional messaging and will only receive informational messaging.

Message Flow:

  • A customer may call or be present in the office. An employee will present the consent process verbally: "Would you like to sign up for SMS from [BRAND]? By providing your phone number to [BRAND] and agreeing you are consenting to receive [other use cases + political/charity messaging]? [Donations will/will not be solicited.] Message and data rates may apply. Message frequency may vary. You can text HELP for help and STOP to opt out. We won't share your mobile information with third parties for marketing." Once the customer agrees verbally, the phone number is recorded, and a confirmation SMS is sent: "[BRAND]: You have agreed to receive SMS [use case(s)]. Msg frequency varies. Msg&data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe, HELP for help. To confirm you also want to receive [political/charity] messages and [donations will/will not be solicited] please reply YES" If user replies: YES — "[BRAND] Thanks, you've now been subscribed to SMS, including [political/charity messages] from [BRAND]. [Donations will/will not be solicited]. Msg frequency varies. Msg&data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe or HELP for help." If user does NOT reply YES, they will not be opted in to [political/charity] messaging and will only receive informational messaging.

Message Flow:

  • [BRAND] provides a paper form to the customer during [appointment/onboarding/renewal/etc.] in which they provide their phone number and sign their consent [link to screenshot of the form using a public link such as Imgur or Google]

Please Note:

The form must include a disclaimer similar to: "By signing this form and providing your phone number, you agree to receive SMS [Use Case(s)] from [Brand Name]. Message frequency may vary. Standard Message and Data Rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out. Reply HELP for help. Consent is not a condition of purchase. Your mobile information will not be sold or shared with third parties for promotional or marketing purposes."

4. Inbound Message - Text to Phone Number

Message Flow:

  • [BRAND] provides a number [PHONE NUMBER] via [website, flyer, or QR code, business card, email signature, etc.]. When the user texts to the number for the first time, the system responds with: "Thank you for your message to [BRAND]! You are now subscribed to [Use Case(s)] Msg freq may vary. Std msg & data rates apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help. We will not share or sell your mobile information for marketing/promotional purposes." [Link or screenshot (using a public link such as Imgur or Google) showing where the phone number is located]

4.1 Inbound Message - Text to Keyword

Message Flow:

  • [BRAND] provides a keyword [KEYWORD] and a number [PHONE NUMBER] via [a website, flyer, or QR code.]. When the user texts "[KEYWORD]," the system responds with: "Thank you for your message to [BRAND]! You are now subscribed to [Use Case(s)] Msg freq may vary. Std msg & data rates apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help. We will not share or sell your mobile information for marketing/promotional purposes." [Link or screenshot (using a public link such as Imgur or Google) showing where the keyword and phone number are located]

Additional Notes:

  • If you have a marketing use case then marketing must be mentioned on the opt in such as "You are opting in to receive marketing sms from [Brand Name]."
  • If you have a political case then you must mention "Donations will/will not be solicited." on the opt in.
  • Campaigns involving any type of lending can only use a digital or physical (paper) opt-in. Verbal and inbound opt-ins are not allowed.
